What is an eBook?

In its most simple definition, an eBook is a digital version of a book that can be read on multiple devices such as eReaders, tablets, or smartphones.

There’s no shortage of eBooks available, it’s like browsing a bookstore. But some are eBooks designed as business resources, typically found on a website for download or purchase.

Though they generally resemble the flow of a print book, eBooks are structured in such a way that makes it easier for reading on a device. Similar to a blog post, they are broken down into segments that make use of subheadings that break down the discussion.

Many businesses have embraced eBooks as a vital communication channel, but there are still some that don’t see the value in eBooks.

It’s easy to understand their scepticism.

The eBook market is saturated. You’ve probably come across dozens of eBooks that have proven unhelpful with unnecessary ramblings and no significant insights. Some are all colourful imagery and quotes without substance. Because of its popularity these days, many eBooks are structured badly and littered with spelling errors – they favour completion over quality. For some businesses, simply having an eBook published with little preparation or intention is enough.

This is exactly the mindset that will see an eBook fail. But we won’t let that happen to you.

Here’s how eBooks grow your business:

They generate leads: When you offer valuable information, you convince your audience to choose your business.

They form part of an inbound marketing campaign: Holistic marketing campaigns are key to retaining customers. With eBooks integrated into your marketing plan, you can provide more comprehensive content in ways social media cannot.

They give you and your business a platform to build your authority: When you provide readers with knowledge, it boosts your brand’s credibility and gives you a solid reputation in your industry.

They function as a lead magnet: People are bombarded with hard-sell advertising these days. Through eBooks, you can provide subtle marketing that generates results without pressing too hard on your audience (such as growing your email list via free downloadable eBooks).

We want you to create eBooks that stand out and offer value. We’re talking about impactful content, excellent writing, spot-on editing.

But an eBook is useless without an effective strategy to underpin its success.

How we create eBooks

We’ve just explained the saturation of eBooks in the marketplace.

That means, without a content strategy, your eBook will simply add to the already saturated white noise: They won’t offer anything unique, informative or interesting.

So when developing your eBook content strategy, here are the three stages we apply that will enable your eBooks to boost your brand, generate leads and position you as a better alternative to your competitors.

Step 1: Client workshop

Like having a business plan, an eBook strategy workshop will enable you to understand and write towards the end goal of your eBook. This is vital in giving the writing of your eBook purpose and a clear intention from the start.

We will help you make confident decisions around three things:

  • Your marketing goals: Do you want to increase brand awareness, generate leads, or both?
  • How your eBook will engage your audience: Will it be educational, entertaining, thought-leading, or polarising?
  • What products or services you are selling (if any) in your eBook: Do they require visual demonstrations, long-form explanations, or customer testimonials?

By having these strategised and planned for, you’ll be able to focus on your objectives and create an eBook with more clarity and purpose. And if you don’t know what you want to achieve with the eBook you publish, you have nothing to mark its success by.

Step 2: Knowing your customers

Your eBook should be targeted to an audience, specifically your customers and your prospects. You want to publish content that your ideal market will enjoy, find useful, and be willing to share to their networks.

This is why it’s essential to know and understand your customers before you just start pumping out an eBook without detailed thought.

By drilling down on this, we’ll be able to create an eBook that your customers will feel is written directly for them. This will keep them interested and engaged, and more importantly, it will make them feel that you genuinely care for them and their needs.

But, with the amount of eBook content small businesses now need to create, it’s not uncommon for content to start missing the mark in favour of quantity over quality.

To ensure this doesn’t happen, our eBook strategy is centred on your customer avatars. Anyone creating content on your behalf must be acutely aware of who you’re pitching content to.

This means that when we start working on eBook content, the relevant information is in place to inform the creation process. Remember, lead-generating content is created for your customer’s benefit, not yours, and that can’t be done without understanding your customers first.

In the content space, we will focus your customer avatars on the following:

  • Their name, age, gender, and where they live.
  • What they do as a customer (or business).
  • What motivates them.
  • The values they live by.
  • Explanation of their lifestyle.
  • Their workplace environment.
  • What problems they face that you have the solution for.

By having this information in your content customer avatars, we’ll be able to consider the needs, interests, and concerns of your customer-base when writing an eBook for them.

It’s also important to remember that most businesses will have more than one ideal customer (or industry) that they are targeting. So, each ideal customer must have its unique customer avatar – you won’t convert a lawyer if your content has been created for a labourer.

Once these two steps are in place, we’re ready to write your eBook.

Your Hero’s Journey eBook

How many Hollywood movies have your watched that are almost exactly the same? Is there any difference between Rocky and Rambo?

The reason these films keep getting made is that audiences love watching them.

Why? Because they tell a story we want to follow.

While you might not be a down-and-out boxer, you have gone through a series of events that led you to start your business. The events you’ve gone through have given you real-world experience and a solution to the pain points your industry deals with.

That’s why you need to share Your Hero’s Journey in your eBook. It’s a great way to announce who you are and why you’re doing what you are.

The reality is that most people don’t know you right now, but if you explain Your Hero’s Journey you share with them something memorable and engaging.

Here’s how we create an eBook around Your Hero’s Journey in a 12-step process:

  • Introduce yourself as the hero.
  • Set up your circumstances.
  • Create empathy for you and your journey.
  • Detail the business opportunity in front of you.
  • Explain the situation you’ve been thrust into.
  • Detail how you are pursuing your opportunity.
  • Highlight the conflict you’ve faced along the way.
  • Introduce your supporting network.
  • Explain how your journey has transformed you.
  • Build to the climax of your story.
  • Share the results of what you’ve gone through.
  • Explain why you’re now best placed to serve your customers.

Hollywood has proven that the Hero’s Journey storyline is a box office success.

Using it to share your story in an ebook is an effective way to announce to your target market who you are and what you do and can significantly build your brand.

And if you’re likeable in Your Hero’s Journey, it will warm-up your ideal customers to your offer and shorten the sales cycle.

Thought Leadership eBooks

A thought leader is an individual or business that is recognised as an authority in their industry and whose views and expertise are sought after.

But if you call yourself a ‘thought leader’ it’s doubtful you really are. It requires more than just saying it. In fact, in all the books and content Richard Branson has created not once have we seen him call himself a thought leader.

Most people referring to themselves as a thought leader don’t put forward any new thoughts or ideas in the works they publish. Posting motivational material doesn’t work either – Tony Robbins has cornered that market anyway.

One way to be considered a genuine thought leader is to publish eBooks that touch on new themes or have a different perspective on issues within your industry.

Thought leadership eBooks are designed to be a knowledgeable reference piece that can be used as a resource tool, providing the most relevant answers a reader might need.

They are by far the most in-depth form of content and require accurate viewpoints backed up by evidence to support what you want to say.

While not an exact science, thought leadership eBooks generally need to have the following characteristics:

  • Contain proven and factually correct data, statistics and evidence from well-known resources (that doesn’t mean gossip magazines).
  • Cite reliable third-party sources such as quotes from respected businesspeople, academics or historical figures.
  • Position the author (i.e. you) as a valued and meaningful contributor within a particular industry.

Remember, you’re not a thought leader until other people are saying it on your behalf. That won’t happen until they come across an ebook that offers something new, educated and relevant to them.

Branded story eBooks

While most of the content we create for you is customer-focused, it doesn’t mean your brand shouldn’t promote your story and showcase the good that you do.

In today’s digital marketing landscape, brands have the power to create the narrative around who they are and how they want to be seen in the marketplace, and go a long way towards influencing what your ideal customers think of you and how they engage with your brand.

For branded story eBooks, Story League’s approach is similar to Your Hero’s Journey, but the focus of the writing is told from the perspective of your brand rather than as an individual (unless your brand is you).

Branded story eBooks are a great way to take charge of how your marketplace perceives your brand and puts you in a controlling position to direct customer conversations about you.

How-to guide eBooks

How-to guides are designed to take a reader from the first to the last step of something while explaining everything in between.

Creating how-to guides takes a lot of time, because of how comprehensive it needs to be.

Truth is, you’ll find how-to guides on the internet for almost every topic (like we said earlier, content is saturated). But we’re talking about an eBook your audience keeps coming back to because it’s a source of truth and knowledge.

We create how-to eBooks by first researching about you and your industry. What you need to address with this type of eBook is every possible question your audience has concerning the said topic.

Then, we’ll answer these questions in ways your competitors have not been able to. It’s an eBook that’s heavy on words, so the structure of this calls for integrating visuals and examples.

The goal of how-to-guide eBooks is to be able to tell the reader everything they need to know that they can’t find anywhere else. This will let your readers know that you’ve done your research, and you know your industry inside out.

Capability statement eBooks

A capability statement eBook is all about your brand – your unique selling proposition, capabilities as a business, achievements, even case studies. Think of it as your business portfolio on full display.

These eBooks are a great way to establish your identity, especially as a small business, to separate you from your competitors.

With a capability statement eBook, your goal isn’t just to sell your products or services. It goes deeper into things such as sharing your policies or your involvement in the community – things that will make your audience see beyond your business.

A capability statement eBook presents your customers with your value, and from there, you show them exactly how you will deliver.  That’s where we come in. We’ll build the communication strategy and craft a strong message that highlights your capabilities to give a clear representation of your business and to win more clients.

We want your eBook to dominate content marketing

We’re a content agency that creates strategic and targeted eBooks that builds your audience and convert them into customers.

At Story League, we believe that our eBook writing services will help you win a dedicated audience and generate significant leads.

Story League does this by identifying the topics your ideal customers want to engage with. We then work with you to create a strategy and produce eBooks that are educational and entertaining, yet valuable to your ideal customers.

Stanford University research shows that statistics alone have a retention rate of up to 10%, but when coupled with anecdotes (or stories), the retention rate rises to nearly 70%.

If you’ve got something meaningful to say and want it to generate significant leads, we are your storytellers.
